Underrated Fantasy Romance Books You Need to Read (Hidden Gems)

by | Apr 14, 2026

Some of the best fantasy romance books are ones you’ve never heard of.

While everyone talks about the latest viral BookTok sensation or bestselling series, there are incredible fantasy romance books that fly under the radar—older titles, debut authors, books from smaller publishers, or stories that just never got the attention they deserved.

These are the hidden gems. The books that make you wonder “why isn’t everyone talking about this?” The ones you want to shout about from the rooftops because they’re that good.

I’ve compiled six underrated fantasy romance books that deserve so much more love. These are clean or fade-to-black romances with beautiful writing, compelling magic, and swoon-worthy love stories.

If you’re tired of reading the same recommendations everywhere, this list is for you.

Why These Books Are Underrated

Before we dive in, here’s what makes these books “underrated”:

Older publications: Some are from the 2000s-2010s before fantasy romance exploded

Lesser-known authors: Not household names (yet)

Smaller marketing: Published before massive social media book communities

Quieter releases: Didn’t get the buzz they deserved

Hidden in plain sight: Overshadowed by bigger releases

But being underrated doesn’t mean they’re not excellent. These books have everything readers love about fantasy romance—they just need more people to discover them.

6 Underrated Fantasy Romance Books

1. Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn

Why You’ll Love It: Coming-of-age story with dark revelations in a glittering castle

Coralie spends her summers at the glittering Castle Auburn, a place of beauty, magic, and wonder. But as she grows older, she begins to see the darkness beneath the surface—the cruelty, the secrets, the things she was too young to understand before. This is a story about losing innocence and finding your own moral compass:

  • Beautiful world-building with magic and wonder
  • Darker undertones as protagonist matures
  • Coming-of-age alongside romance
  • Questions about power, cruelty, and complicity
  • Sweet romance that develops naturally
  • Gorgeous prose from Sharon Shinn

Heat Level: Clean, fade-to-black Tropes: Coming-of-age, slow-burn romance, discovering truth, moral awakening Perfect For: Readers who want thoughtful fantasy with romance woven in

Why It’s Underrated: Published in 2001, this gem often gets overlooked in favor of Shinn’s other series. It’s quieter and more contemplative than typical fantasy romance, but absolutely beautiful.

2. The Healer’s Apprentice by Melanie Dickerson

Why You’ll Love It: Sleeping Beauty retelling with healer heroine and forbidden love

Rose has been appointed as a healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle—a rare opportunity for a woodcutter’s daughter. Failure means returning home to marry the aging, disgusting merchant her mother has chosen. When she must tend to the injured Lord Hamlin, the future duke, she begins to understand emotions she’s never felt before. But falling in love is forbidden—Lord Hamlin is betrothed to a mysterious young woman in hiding:

  • Unique Sleeping Beauty retelling approach
  • Heroine with practical skills (healing)
  • Forbidden love with real obstacles
  • Medieval setting with castle life
  • Clean romance with genuine chemistry
  • Journey of self-discovery alongside romance

Heat Level: Clean, Christian fiction Tropes: Forbidden love, class difference, fairy tale retelling, healer heroine Perfect For: Readers who love clean fairy tale retellings with medieval settings

Why It’s Underrated: Often shelved only in Christian fiction, this book deserves wider readership. It’s a genuinely sweet romance with fairy tale magic.

3. The Singer of All Songs by Kate Constable (Chanters of Tremaris #1)

Why You’ll Love It: Unique magic system based on song and ice priestess leaving her sheltered life

Calwyn has never been beyond the high ice-wall that guards the sisters of Antaris from the world. She knows only her life as a novice ice priestess, tending bees, singing ice chantments, and dreaming. But when the mysterious Outlander Darrow appears inside the Wall with warnings of danger, Calwyn leaves safety for a journey with a man she barely knows—an adventure as beautiful and dangerous as the music of chantment itself:

  • Unique magic system based on singing/chantments
  • Sheltered heroine discovering the world
  • Different types of magic from different cultures
  • Slow-burn romance built on trust and journey
  • Beautiful, lyrical prose
  • Quest/adventure alongside character growth

Heat Level: YA, clean Tropes: Sheltered heroine, journey/quest romance, unique magic, reluctant allies to lovers Perfect For: Readers who want unique magic systems and atmospheric world-building

Why It’s Underrated: Published in 2002, this Australian series never got much attention in the US market. The magic system is genuinely unique and the romance beautifully developed.

4. The Amaranth Enchantment by Julie Berry

Why You’ll Love It: Cinderella-esque story with witch’s spell and justice for murdered parents

When Lucinda’s parents left for the royal ball and never returned, she became stuck in servitude at her evil aunt’s jewelry store. Then a mysterious visitor and bizarre piece of jewelry enter the shop, setting in motion events that will forever alter Lucinda’s path. She’ll dance at the royal ball, fall under the Amaranth Witch’s spell, avenge her parents’ death, restore justice to a corrupt town—and maybe capture the heart of a prince:

  • Cinderella vibes with darker mystery elements
  • Avenging parents’ murder alongside romance
  • Witch’s magic and enchantments
  • Justice and corruption themes
  • Multiple plot threads weaving together
  • Satisfying fantasy and romance resolution

Heat Level: YA, clean Tropes: Cinderella retelling, mystery/justice, magical jewelry, prince romance, orphan heroine Perfect For: Readers who want fairy tale magic with mystery and justice

Why It’s Underrated: Published in 2009, this got lost among bigger YA fantasy releases. It’s a gem that combines fairy tale, mystery, and romance beautifully.

5. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George

Why You’ll Love It: East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling with girl who can talk to animals

A girl born without a name, the youngest of nine children, discovers she can talk to animals. When a mysterious white bear makes a bargain with her family—wealth in exchange for her service at his castle for one year—she agrees to save her family. But the white bear is under a curse, and only she can break it. Her journey will take her east of the sun and west of the moon:

  • Beautiful Norse mythology and fairy tale retelling
  • Heroine with unique gift (talking to animals)
  • Mysterious cursed hero
  • Journey across magical landscapes
  • Sacrifice and determination
  • Classic fairy tale atmosphere with fresh voice

Heat Level: YA, clean Tropes: Beauty and the Beast elements, curse breaking, sacrifice, journey/quest, talking to animals Perfect For: Readers who love classic fairy tale retellings with Nordic influence

Why It’s Underrated: Jessica Day George has a devoted following, but this standalone often gets overlooked in favor of her series. It’s one of the best fairy tale retellings out there.

6. Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier

Why You’ll Love It: Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling with fae realm and sisters’ bond

Five sisters slip through a portal in their castle each month to dance in the fae realm of the Other Kingdom. But when their father falls ill and a mysterious cousin arrives, dark forces threaten both their world and the magical realm they love. Jenica, the second sister, must protect her family and navigate dangerous fae politics while guarding the secret of the portal:

  • Twelve Dancing Princesses meets fae mythology
  • Strong sister bonds and family loyalty
  • Dangerous and beautiful fae realm
  • Romance woven with political intrigue
  • Romanian folklore influences
  • Juliet Marillier’s signature gorgeous prose

Heat Level: YA, fade-to-black Tropes: Fairy tale retelling, fae romance, sister bonds, portal fantasy, dancing Perfect For: Readers who love fae worlds and sister relationships

Why It’s Underrated: Published in 2007, this is often overshadowed by Marillier’s Sevenwaters series. It’s a standalone masterpiece that deserves more recognition.

Why Underrated Books Deserve Love

The fantasy romance community has exploded in recent years, which is amazing. But it also means some incredible books get buried under the constant stream of new releases and viral recommendations.

Reading underrated books means:

  • Discovering stories others might have missed
  • Supporting authors who deserve more recognition
  • Finding books with less hype but just as much heart
  • Expanding beyond the same recommendations everyone shares
  • Being able to introduce others to hidden gems

These books gave me everything I love about fantasy romance—magic, adventure, swoon-worthy relationships, and worlds I didn’t want to leave. They deserve to be on more TBR lists.
