Two months after launching A Fog of Shadows, I wanted to give you an update on what’s happening with Book 2 and share a little sneak peek.
Here’s where we are with A Line of Shadows.
Book 2: A Line of Shadows
If you’ve read A Fog of Shadows, you know there are six sisters. Kateri’s story was just the beginning.
Book 2 follows Heather.
While Kateri was navigating Phobia and discovering her connection to Magnus, Heather was experiencing her own revelation—one that happened at possibly the worst possible time.
Where We Are in the Process
A Line of Shadows is written.
Current status: The manuscript is in beta reading and heading into editing.
What that means:
- Beta readers are giving me feedback on the story
- I’m incorporating their insights
- Professional editing is the next step
- Then cover design, formatting, and all the preparation for release
The process takes time. I want Book 2 to be as strong as Book 1, which means not rushing through the important steps.
What’s Book 2 About?
Without spoiling anything from either book, here’s what I can tell you:
Heather’s story is different from Kateri’s.
Where Kateri’s journey was about survival and proving herself in impossible circumstances, Heather’s story explores different challenges.
Heather is:
- Shy in ways that are different from Kateri
- Dealing with her own unique abilities
- Discovering her mate at the absolute worst possible moment
And Mikkel:
- One of the Ren brothers you met in Book 1
- Has his own complexities and challenges
Their story unfolds against the backdrop of what happened in Book 1—because the events of Kateri’s book don’t exist in isolation. They affect everyone.
A Sneak Peek
Here’s a glimpse of the opening of A Line of Shadows. No major spoilers, but if you haven’t read Book 1 yet, some context might not make complete sense.
Fate has cruelly inconvenient timing. It picks now of all times to reveal to me, my mate? Ugh, I need to focus on Kateri right now, not the smooth inflection in the voice that just spoke to me. I take a deep breath. Wait, he just asked me a question. Magnus! That is right, he wants to know where Magnus is. With my voice only a little shaky, I reply, “He is fighting the madness.”
There is silence on the other end. I can’t blame him; I just did the same thing to him. Then his voice turns gentle and reverent, “Mesi, right?” Mikkel asks.
I blush deeply at his tone. My shyness takes hold of me. A thrill goes through me as he says my name—even though he got it wrong.
“Once we get Kateri back, we need to talk, yes?” He asks.
“Yes.” Oh, great job Heather! I think to myself. You are quite the conversationalist. You are blowing him away with your charm and wit.
That’s where Heather’s story begins—in the middle of crisis, discovering her mate while trying to help save her sister.
Fate’s timing, as Heather notes, is cruelly inconvenient.
What I’m Learning Writing Book 2
Every book teaches you something new about writing.
With Book 2, I learned:
Each sister needs her own voice. Heather isn’t Kateri. Her narration, her concerns, her way of seeing the world—all different. Making that distinction clear while keeping it in the same series was a challenge.
The world expands. Book 1 focused starts heavily on Phobia and what happened there. Book 2 opens up more of the world, shows different locations, explores siren society more deeply.
Established characters need growth. Characters from Book 1 appear in Book 2, and they needed to feel like they’d grown from their experiences without overshadowing the new main couple.
The stakes shift. Each book has its own stakes, its own conflicts. Book 2’s challenges are different from Book 1’s, even though they’re connected.
Series plotting is complex. Keeping track of what readers know, what they don’t know yet, what’s been revealed, what’s coming—it’s a lot more intricate than writing a standalone.
The Beta Reading Process
This is my first time working with beta readers for Book 2, and it’s been incredibly valuable.
What beta readers do:
- Read the manuscript before it’s professionally edited
- Give feedback on plot, pacing, character development
- Catch inconsistencies or confusing sections
- Share reader perspective on what works and what doesn’t
Why it matters: I’ve been so close to this manuscript that I can’t see it objectively anymore. Beta readers bring fresh eyes and honest feedback.
What I’m learning: Some things I thought were clear weren’t as obvious as I believed. Some scenes I worried about actually work well. And some aspects need strengthening before the book is ready.
This process makes the book better. It’s worth the extra time.
What’s Next
For Book 2:
- Incorporate beta reader feedback
- Professional editing
- Cover design
- Formatting and preparation
- Release (date TBD)
For the series:
- Book 3 is also written (yes, really)
- Planning continues for Books 4-6
- The overall series arc is mapped out
I’m not rushing. Each book needs time to be done right.
Why Heather?
After Kateri’s story, why did I choose Heather for Book 2?
Heather’s story felt like the natural next step.
Without spoiling Book 1, events happen that directly lead into Heather’s journey. The timeline overlaps. Her perspective on those events adds depth to what you already know.
And Heather herself is compelling.
She’s shy, but that shyness manifests differently than Kateri’s introversion. She has her own strengths, her own struggles, her own growth to undergo.
Her abilities are unique among the sisters, and you’ll see powers and magic explored in ways Book 1 didn’t cover.
Mikkel, her mate, brings his own complexity to the story. He’s not Magnus. Their relationship dynamic is completely different from Kateri and Magnus’s.
Each sister will get a book that’s truly hers. Heather’s is second because her story connects most directly to Kateri’s while still being entirely her own.
For Readers Waiting for Book 2
I know waiting is hard.
Here’s what I can promise:
I’m not going to rush it. Book 2 will release when it’s ready—when beta readers have weighed in, when editing is complete, when I’m confident it’s as strong as it can be.
The wait will be worth it. Heather and Mikkel’s story is one I’m proud of. You’ll meet a new sister, see familiar characters in new light, and discover more about the world of sirens and Rens.
The series is progressing. Book 3 is written. Book 4 is planned. This isn’t a series that will languish half-finished. The story will continue.
You’ll know when Book 2 is ready. I’ll announce release dates through my newsletter and social media when we’re close.
